Baltic sprats (Sprattus sprattus) One of the most important commercial fish of the Baltic region. Is found in abundance in both – Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Finland. Baltic sprats looks similar to small Baltic herring, but differs from it with sharply protruding abdominal spines, position of ventral fins and a smaller mouth. Spawning occurs from May to August. Common commercial catch size is 6-15 cm, however the fish can reach 13-15 cm in length. The main fishing for sprat occur in autumn (September – November). Sprat is widely used for canning, smoking, preserves production.<\/p>\n
